I've just been filling up the peanut containers and coconut shells (with lard cake) for the birds.
They've been busier than ever these last few days. We even had a jay come along for a feed. And two blackbirds have been duelling at dawn for prime position at the lard cake station, pausing only to take out their aggression on an innocent sparrow.
But, I'm worried. I sneezed four times whilst preparing their food.
Does this mean I have inflicted bird flu on the local bird population?

your as bad as me i was afraid of my dog catching it of me some say they cant but ive known dogs have some thing similar almost as soon as ive got rid of it myself before.
Being outdoors your bird food should be fine the cold will kill any bugs,and if we hear of bird flu about again we know whos to blame.hahaaaaaaaaaaaa

OMG - the dog! And the cow I met in the field this morning! And, come to think of it, I haven't seen next door's cat for a day or two!

I refilled my bird feeders this morning.
I then strolled round the allotments where I'm sure that I spotted a jay in one of the trees. To see one on the feeder would be great as I only ever catch a glimpse of them! xx

Jays are very shy - as soon as it glimpsed (or sensed) movement in the house when we moved nearer to the window, it fled! It's lovely seeing that vivid flash of blue. x

Pro We watch every day as our birds and squirrels descend on the peanuts and seeds I put out every morning...it's funny though, it can go quiet but as soon as we come down to eat during the day, they all appear and eat too...
Very entertaining...have had sparrows, pigeons and blackbirds plus three squirrels taking turns with the peanuts, all around at the same time and blue tits on the fat balls, which the squirrels now leave alone because they've got what they like best...GBHs...XX

You must have well-behaved squirrels! A lot of other people have said that they wreck the feeders and demolish everything. Perversely, I'd love to see a squirrel eating ours - I've still not seen a red one close up! x

Pro I decided not to try to defeat them so put a deep pot right next to the bird feeding tray that only they could get in to and put peanuts in it every morning...three of them...a family I think because one is clearly little...come down and eat them and have a few seeds as well from the tray and they destroy nothing now...it seems to have worked brilliantly I'm happy to say... GBHs...XXX

One of my Joyful Moments each day during the winter solstice if filling the bird feeders. They are all right outside our windows so we can sit and just enjoy the beauty of the birds. Many blessings this season!
